A suspension of 5.0 g of silver cyanide in 100 ml of dichloromethanewas treated with 2.4 g of sulfur monochloride (S2Cl2) under vigorous stirring. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. The solution turned pale yellow. Dichloromethane was distilled off at reduced pressure and room temperature. A bright yellow residue remained in the flask. On standing overnight (under reduced pressure), the material turned into a brick-red solid. The yield was 1.20 g (100%).
