C6H5CH2SCH3 + H2O2 → C6H5CH2S(O)CH3 + H2O

Twenty-five ml. of 30% hydrogen peroxide (0.25 mole) was added during one-half hour in 5-ml. portions to a solution of 35 g. (0.25 mole) of benzyl methyl sulfide in 100 ml. of acetic acid with occasional cooling to keep the temperature below 50°. After 24 hours the solution was poured into a solution of 80 g. of sodium hydroxide in 500 ml. of water. The sulfoxide was extracted with ether, the ether layer was dried over anhydrous potassium carbonate and distilled, yielding 37 g. (94%) of methyl benzyl sulfoxide, b.p. 116—118° (0.8 mm.).

Anal. Calculated for C8H10OS: C, 62.30; H, 6.54. Found: C, 62.51; H, 6.80.
